5.0 out of 5 stars Try it yourself, January 20, 2001

This review is from: Eat Right 4 Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution to Staying Healthy, Living Longer & Achieving Your Ideal Weight (Hardcover)
Two of us have been following this plan for over 1.5 years. My partner lost about 20 pounds in the first few months, without counting portions or calories, and has maintained his ideal weight without effort. His energy returned to a level not experienced for several years - one of the keys was putting MODERATE amounts of organic beef back into his diet. Eliminating wheat, dairy products and foods with problematic lectins, while emphasizing beneficial foods such as leafy dark-green vegetables also helped. Since he's Type O and I'm Type A, the protein part of our diets differs somewhat, but we've quite easily found ways to cook together. We both noticed much clearer sinuses after just a week. He eliminated asthma symptoms and my allergies improved. I no longer suffer from PMS. I lived with knee problems since childhood, but these have now disappeared, as did the stiffness in my fingers and back in the morning. Digestive problems and stomach aches, a major problem for me since childhood, eased greatly in the first couple of months and are still improving. My complexion cleared and my heart stopped "skipping beats" - I could go on and on.

I have been interested in nutrition and have kept abreast of various schools of thought for the last 25 years. When I first heard of Eat Right I dismissed it as a fad diet that was not based on scientific evidence. Before reading Eat Right I consumed what I believed were "healthy" foods for many years: whole grains, little or no meat, lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, legumes, "good" fats, spring water. Very few additives, prepared or fast foods or medications. However, some foods that were healthy according to the literature and research were healthy for other blood types but not for Type A. When I eliminated these foods and ate more of the beneficial foods I immediately saw results.

I just read most of Live Right 4 Your Type and highly recommend it. Eat Right 4 Your Type was a great introduction, but it's several years old and much research has taken place since then. For someone new to the eating plan, reading both books would be helpful. The information in Live Right is more current, more specific for individuals and a little more technical. Beyond food recommendations, Live Right's information about cortisol and stress was very useful for me.

Read the reviews of people who have actually tried the eating plan, then try it for a month and decide yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not just another nutrition book., July 4, 2000

This review is from: Eat Right 4 Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution to Staying Healthy, Living Longer & Achieving Your Ideal Weight (Hardcover)
I have to disagree with the customer review that stated that this book was just another way of saying, "Eat better and exercise, and you'll lose weight." I have type O blood, and one of the many helpful recommendations Dr. D'Adamo gives is for type O's to avoid wheat, which is quite contrary to most health recommendations. I've tried all my life to eat whole wheat products because health experts recommend it. Little did I know how hindering it was to my body and my weight loss efforts to eat wheat. I also found that not all people benefit from strenuous exercise. For some blood types, yoga and tai chi can be more beneficial than strenuous aerobics. The whole point of this book is that people cannot follow the same diets and exercise programs to get the same results, and I completely agree. If this wasn't true, people who are trying to follow traditional health recommendations for exercise and eating wouldn't be finding themselves overweight and unhealthy, despite their efforts. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is trying to lose weight, reduce stress, and increase their overall health. I have lost weight, but more than that, I am more healthy than I've ever been in my life. I don't believe Dr. D'Adamo would have done such strenuous research, nor would people be doing so well on the diet, if it was just another way of telling people to eat right and exercise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Receipt for better living : "Eat Right for Your Blood Type", October 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Eat Right 4 Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution to Staying Healthy, Living Longer & Achieving Your Ideal Weight (Hardcover)
While working in a health food store in Wichita, Kansas about a year and a half ago, I was exposed to Dr.D'Adamo's book. It took me a while to decide to take small bited of his recommended diet for my blood type. Quit frankly it seemed to me that I would have to give up every food I liked, and that staying on this program was a jail sentence which I was most likely to abort in a few short days. The theory made a lot of sense, but after many years of "yo-yo" dieting, I must admit I thought this was just the latest diet fad. I felt that I needed to do something about the way I was feeling both physically, and emotionally. I decided to make some suggested changes a bit at a time, finding at one point that I was ready to make a full commitment to the doctors advice, as I had started to feel better, and wanted to see if what I was experiencing could possibly get even better. I went to my family doctor who agreed to support me in my efforts, after she agreed to read the book! She took base line blood work, checked my vital signs, including a physical. She found that my blood pressure was too high, my triglyceride level was unacceptable, cholesterol was elevated, and my energy level was extremely low. I had complaints of leg cramps, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and carbohydrate cravings. I had also put on over 50 pounds in the past 3 years. Being 50 years old I was also struggling with postmenopausal symptoms. After 20 weeks of following Dr. D'Adamo's suggestions many of my symptoms subsided, and much to my delight I have dropped 27 pounds. I am even more motivated to continue my eating life style changes due to the drastic changes I have obtained. I highly recommend for anyone to explore this wonderful perscription for staying healthy, and see what taking control of your life feels like. The rewards are well worth the personal commitment toward living longer and, having the quality of life that makes you want to face every new day.

Diet Menu

Losing weight can only come from a change in your eating habits. You will find in your meals all the protein, complex carbohydrates, fatty acids, fibers, minerals, and vitamins that you need to be and feel healthy.

Choosing lean cuts of meat and poultry as well as using healthy cooking methods for fish is a good source of iron and proteins without consuming a high quantity of saturated fats.

A large variety of vegetables will provide fiber and vitamins with a low amount of calories and a small portion of starch (source of complex carbohydrates) at each meal will provide an important source of energy, which suppresses hunger.

Dairy is the main source of calcium, which is important to fight osteoporosis, and should be consumed low fat or fat free.

It is important to focus on what is good for you without losing the pleasure of eating.

A very strict diet, which will be difficult to follow and will make you feel hungry and frustrated, is not recommended. It can lead you to give up and go back to your old eating habits. In addition, fast weight loss involves the loss of water and muscle. Muscles are very important to have nice body shape, tone, and a higher base metabolic rate (calories burnt at rest). Exercising on a regular basis is a great way to improve your base metabolic rate and achieve a leaner figure.

The goal of a successful program is to help you loose pounds and stabilize your weight instead of gaining all the pounds back as soon as you stop paying attention to what you eat. Once you reach your healthy weight, it's time for a stabilization phase, where you keep eating healthy and well balanced but will reintroduce in your diet a little more vegetable oil for cooking, a desert once a week, a little bit more starch.

Keeping your mind busy by exercising, reading, and taking advantage of your free time with new activities will help you forget that you are dieting. Having your new healthy habits become part of your way of life in a very natural way is the key to your success.

One such brand, Hills Science Diet dog food, tries to fill this need by creating different foods to nourish dogs with different needs.

For Puppies

For Older Dogs

Just as we have foods and supplements sold to humans that are targeted for our elderly population, Hills Science Diet dog food has formulas made for older dogs as well. Hills Science Diet dog food for mature dogs has two big differences from regular Hills Science Diet dog food. First, the food is easier to chew, for canines who have weaker jaws or teeth after so many years chewing their normal dog food. The mature formula also uses fish like salmon as one of the meats, so dogs get the omega 3 fatty acids which are so renowned for better health in people. Targeted for dogs over the age of six, Hills Science Diet dog food for mature dogs is a good buy.

So, as you can see, Hills Science Diet dog food targets the main periods of a dog's life, and tries to provide the right amount of nutrition for each of those periods, whether it's high protein for growing puppies, different formulas to target adult dogs with different lifestyles, or older dogs who still need nutrients. Ketosis is the name of a biochemical phenomenon that happens during extreme carbohydrate restriction or prolonged starvation. The term ketosis is not to be confused with ketoacidosis, which is what eventually happens to diabetics if their insulin beomes too low and their blood sugar goes completely out of whack. This is very dangerous, but it is something that only happens to diabetics (mainly type I), and there is absolutely no risk whatsoever of this happening with a ketogenic diet.

It is a well-known fact that heart diseases and excess body weight are related. Obesity, heavy alcohol consumption and lack of activity are the main factors causing high blood pressure. Too much body fat leads to an increased risk of health problems through clogging the blood vessels with cholesterol. That is why the successful treatment of high blood pressure starts with following a diet specifically aimed at reducing high blood pressure.

If you already have high blood pressure, you cannot reverse it to low permanently. Instead, you can control your high blood pressure by taking a prescribed medication and amending your diet. Research has shown that a high blood pressure diet can effectively prevent blood pressure from rising above normal.

Today, most of our meals still contain more fat than the government recommends, and most of the vending machines and fast-food options do not meet the nutritional standards set by the U.S. government. With fast-food snacks available at every corner, it's often hard to switch to a healthy diet.

High blood pressure diets are designed to decrease sodium, increase potassium, and lessen calories. This way you will maintain a reasonable weight. This diet consists of foods that are delicious and low in fat such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products and lean proteins.

Here are some simple tips to help you follow your high blood pressure diet guidelines:

1. Make sure you eat a healthy breakfast. Eating in the morning will increase your energy and will help you avoid snacks before lunch. A quick breakfast can be as easy as a bowl of cereal, a slice of whole-wheat toast, cereal bar or fresh fruit.

2. When following your high blood pressure diet, your daily food intake must include foods from five food groups:

* Protein: Eat meats that are lower in fat, such as chicken, turkey, tuna, or low-fat luncheon meats. Make salads with a low fat meat or vegetables and light salad dressing.

* Grains: Always try eating a whole wheat version of your favorite bread, be it a loaf, a bagel or a roll.

* Vegetables: Eat tomatoes, peppers, baby carrots and other colorful vegetables as many as you like. The brighter the vegetable, the more antioxidant vitamin A it contains.

* Fruits: Fruits should be eaten fresh. Fruit has fiber and healthy calories, and you will want to eat less during the day. Juice has fructose which fills up with energy. That's why juice should become a part of a healthy breakfast along with a cereal.

* Dairy: Try low-fat or non-fat milk, non-fat chocolate milk, and low-fat cheese. Basically, any type of cottage cheese or yogurt goes well with fruit.

If you want to avoid facing complicated and often life-threatening consequences of high blood pressure, you may want to ensure that you and your family eat healthy meals that don't pack on the pounds and rise your cholesterol.

Emphasizing healthy food choices can help you enjoy your meals without excessive fat, sugar, and calories. Healthy food choices can be a carry-over from healthy menu and meal planning at home while managing your high blood pressure with diet.

Switching to a diet without excessive fat and salt and staying fit will help you loose weight and can help prevent or at least delay heart-related problems. Along with monitoring and medication treatment, a high blood pressure diet can help control your blood pressure and reduce your risk of stroke, kidney and heart failure and heart attack.

See your doctor before making any diet or lifestyle changes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book! A must read for women with PCOS! Updated info!, November 30, 2010
This review is from: The PCOS Diet Plan: A Natural Approach to Health for Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Paperback)
Very thorough and informative. From following the meal plan laid out in the book I have already lost 10lbs. in not even a week! This isn't just a "diet" book although it says on the cover. It helped me understand the syndrome. I have read two other very well written books about PCOS and this is right up there with them if not better. The author provides info on studies that are very recent about PCOS. I feel more comfortable about my condition. This book helped me feel empowered with the proper info and tools to tackle this condition. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has PCOS.

2.0 out of 5 stars Adequate book but too complicated, April 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The PCOS Diet Plan: A Natural Approach to Health for Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Paperback)
This book gives a very nice overview of PCOS and a concise description of the syndrome. However, the diet plan that she lays out is quite complicated. It involves EXTENSIVE counting of carbs and basically, relies on the glycemic index to determine what and when to eat. For the most part, it is correct but it was too much for me to follow, while trying to cook for a family. Basically, I took control of my PCOS by:

1. Cutting out grains and refined starches (sugar, breads, pastas)
2. Cutting out root veggies (potatoes, carrots, onions)
3. Increasing protein
4. Increasing water.

That's it. That's all there is to it. I even allow myself one small helping of "Carb laden" food a day and have steadily lost weight and increased my fertility.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seven pound weight loss in just over a week!, January 10, 2011
By
This review is from: The PCOS Diet Plan: A Natural Approach to Health for Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Paperback)
I was first diagnosed with PCOS nearly 18 years ago. After feeling as if the medical community completely ignored the condition, I gave up trying to halt the dangerous effects of my diagnosis and simply watched my hair fall out, my weight increase, etc. I've been on medications to counter the effects for over ten years and saw little improvement in my symptoms. Then, two weeks ago, a friend loaned me a copy of this book. For the first time in a long time, I was interested in learning more. I thought I had read it all. Wrong. Not once in all of these years has a physician told me to watch my carbs and that simple timing of the necessary carbs I do eat could really make a difference. I feel like an idiot for not making the connection sooner but, well, here I am. I am only about 12 pounds overweight. Not too bad for someone with PCOS but it is disconcerting because I watch as my weight slowly inches upward, no matter what I do. I don't fry food. I eat fast-food occasionally but try to pick healthier items from the menu and I am moderately active. I have always been a label reader but my focus was on calories and fat. Didn't really put much emphasis on the carb count. I couldn't figure out why I just kept putting on weight while I ate my low-fat, "healthy" food. Reading this was literally like a light bulb going on over my head. Can you say "Duh!" This book helped empower me to take charge and gave me a much needed boost of optimism...just enough to make me WANT to try again instead of simply taking a spectator's role. And, amazingly enough, it is working! I have lost seven pounds in just over a week. Most importantly, the diet isn't extreme. It is common sense and a plan that we should really be following anyway. No gimicks, no quick fixes. Just good nutrition and healthy eating habits presented in a way that makes you feel FULL.

2000 Calorie Diet-What could it look like?

2000 Calorie Diet-What could it look like?

Most nutritional values on food labels are based on a 2000 calorie per day plan. Many people feel that on this limitation, or if they are on a few less calories, that this isnt possible, that it could not be enough food. Fitness One Training Systems trainer Allen Branch shows you just how much food you CAN consume on a 2000 calorie diet. Keep in mind we realize that caloric intakes differ between individuals and that this is just an illustration.

4.0 out of 5 stars hypoglycemia for dummies, May 13, 2003
As someone who is sick of "being in the fog" from my hypoglycemia I greatly welcomed this book. I needed a book to talk TO me about all of the overwhelming info for treating this and not another book that gave a lot of medical jargon I don't need or understand. I love this book for its nonwordy descriptions of the basics of hypoglycemia- I could actually read this book and understand it all. The writers do a good job discussing the symptoms and what is happening in the body for hypoglycemia to occur. Just like my dietician prescribed for me, Cheryl Chow discusses eating a 40 carb 30 protein and 30 fats early on and then increase carbs if your body allows it. It shows a new "hypoglycemic" food pyramid that shows bread, grains, pasta moved 2 steps up and the veggie group is what you should have more of. (THANK YOU!!) The book does seem to contradict itself in places when discussing carbs(or they may be just trying to say everyone is going to be different).

The only things that bothered me about the book is that, while it does discuss a lot of different topics such as herbal supplements, vitamins, exercise in detail it would discuss other topics with just a sentence or two. Usually these were areas that I would want a lot more detail because I'm having difficulty with them. Of course there were some topics discussed that I really did not see why they were relevant (I guess it may help someone else though). The recipe section was a bit disappointing- only 14 recipies. So if you want more try the Low Blood Sugar Cookbook by Patricia and Edward Krimmel (he's hypo too) and also The Zone. The Zone is based on the 40/30/30 plan too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Think twice before buying this book which gives wrong information for hypoglycemics., July 13, 2005
I would advise against this book. The authors are ill-informed and suggest such things as kava kava which has been shown to cause liver failure and the recipes contain white flour and white bread which is detrimental to blood sugar. I recommend books written by those who actually suffer from hypoglycemia such as "Hypoglycemia: The Classic Healthcare Handbook" by Jeraldine Saunders or "The Low Blood Sugar Handbook" by Edward Krimmel and Patricia Krimmel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great beginner book!, January 3, 2006
I read this book as a refresher and cannot imagine a more in-depth explanation of hypoglycemia and how to deal with it--emotionally and physically for beginners.

It does a great job of describing hypo and discussing the condition with friends and family. In addition, it helps explain what you should eat and when is the best time to do so. The only drawback I found was that the recipes included some of the things they say you should stay away from. However, after eating healthy and regularly, you will find that you can eat some of those things and not feel the effects. At the end of the day, you need to listen to your body and use the book as a tool.

Finally, I would also recommend reading Body for Life by Bill Phillips. His diet is something that hypo can and should use. He delves into the many different types of proteins and carbohydrates. He also has a Body for Life cookbook that I use 3-4 times per week. His cookbook offers easy to make recipes that would surpise you to find the meals so nutritionally sound.
