5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book! A must read for women with PCOS! Updated info!, November 30, 2010
This review is from: The PCOS Diet Plan: A Natural Approach to Health for Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Paperback)
Very thorough and informative. From following the meal plan laid out in the book I have already lost 10lbs. in not even a week! This isn't just a "diet" book although it says on the cover. It helped me understand the syndrome. I have read two other very well written books about PCOS and this is right up there with them if not better. The author provides info on studies that are very recent about PCOS. I feel more comfortable about my condition. This book helped me feel empowered with the proper info and tools to tackle this condition. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has PCOS.

2.0 out of 5 stars Adequate book but too complicated, April 26, 2011

This review is from: The PCOS Diet Plan: A Natural Approach to Health for Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Paperback)
This book gives a very nice overview of PCOS and a concise description of the syndrome. However, the diet plan that she lays out is quite complicated. It involves EXTENSIVE counting of carbs and basically, relies on the glycemic index to determine what and when to eat. For the most part, it is correct but it was too much for me to follow, while trying to cook for a family. Basically, I took control of my PCOS by:

1. Cutting out grains and refined starches (sugar, breads, pastas)
2. Cutting out root veggies (potatoes, carrots, onions)
3. Increasing protein
4. Increasing water.

That's it. That's all there is to it. I even allow myself one small helping of "Carb laden" food a day and have steadily lost weight and increased my fertility.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seven pound weight loss in just over a week!, January 10, 2011
By
This review is from: The PCOS Diet Plan: A Natural Approach to Health for Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Paperback)
I was first diagnosed with PCOS nearly 18 years ago. After feeling as if the medical community completely ignored the condition, I gave up trying to halt the dangerous effects of my diagnosis and simply watched my hair fall out, my weight increase, etc. I've been on medications to counter the effects for over ten years and saw little improvement in my symptoms. Then, two weeks ago, a friend loaned me a copy of this book. For the first time in a long time, I was interested in learning more. I thought I had read it all. Wrong. Not once in all of these years has a physician told me to watch my carbs and that simple timing of the necessary carbs I do eat could really make a difference. I feel like an idiot for not making the connection sooner but, well, here I am. I am only about 12 pounds overweight. Not too bad for someone with PCOS but it is disconcerting because I watch as my weight slowly inches upward, no matter what I do. I don't fry food. I eat fast-food occasionally but try to pick healthier items from the menu and I am moderately active. I have always been a label reader but my focus was on calories and fat. Didn't really put much emphasis on the carb count. I couldn't figure out why I just kept putting on weight while I ate my low-fat, "healthy" food. Reading this was literally like a light bulb going on over my head. Can you say "Duh!" This book helped empower me to take charge and gave me a much needed boost of optimism...just enough to make me WANT to try again instead of simply taking a spectator's role. And, amazingly enough, it is working! I have lost seven pounds in just over a week. Most importantly, the diet isn't extreme. It is common sense and a plan that we should really be following anyway. No gimicks, no quick fixes. Just good nutrition and healthy eating habits presented in a way that makes you feel FULL.

2000 Calorie Diet-What could it look like?

Many people feel that on this limitation, or if they are on a few less calories, that this isnt possible, that it could not be enough food. Fitness One Training Systems trainer Allen Branch shows you just how much food you CAN consume on a 2000 calorie diet. Keep in mind we realize that caloric intakes differ between individuals and that this is just an illustration.

4.0 out of 5 stars hypoglycemia for dummies, May 13, 2003
As someone who is sick of "being in the fog" from my hypoglycemia I greatly welcomed this book. I needed a book to talk TO me about all of the overwhelming info for treating this and not another book that gave a lot of medical jargon I don't need or understand. I love this book for its nonwordy descriptions of the basics of hypoglycemia- I could actually read this book and understand it all. The writers do a good job discussing the symptoms and what is happening in the body for hypoglycemia to occur. Just like my dietician prescribed for me, Cheryl Chow discusses eating a 40 carb 30 protein and 30 fats early on and then increase carbs if your body allows it. It shows a new "hypoglycemic" food pyramid that shows bread, grains, pasta moved 2 steps up and the veggie group is what you should have more of. (THANK YOU!!) The book does seem to contradict itself in places when discussing carbs(or they may be just trying to say everyone is going to be different).

The only things that bothered me about the book is that, while it does discuss a lot of different topics such as herbal supplements, vitamins, exercise in detail it would discuss other topics with just a sentence or two. Usually these were areas that I would want a lot more detail because I'm having difficulty with them. Of course there were some topics discussed that I really did not see why they were relevant (I guess it may help someone else though). The recipe section was a bit disappointing- only 14 recipies. So if you want more try the Low Blood Sugar Cookbook by Patricia and Edward Krimmel (he's hypo too) and also The Zone. The Zone is based on the 40/30/30 plan too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Think twice before buying this book which gives wrong information for hypoglycemics., July 13, 2005
I would advise against this book. The authors are ill-informed and suggest such things as kava kava which has been shown to cause liver failure and the recipes contain white flour and white bread which is detrimental to blood sugar. I recommend books written by those who actually suffer from hypoglycemia such as "Hypoglycemia: The Classic Healthcare Handbook" by Jeraldine Saunders or "The Low Blood Sugar Handbook" by Edward Krimmel and Patricia Krimmel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great beginner book!, January 3, 2006
I read this book as a refresher and cannot imagine a more in-depth explanation of hypoglycemia and how to deal with it--emotionally and physically for beginners.

It does a great job of describing hypo and discussing the condition with friends and family. In addition, it helps explain what you should eat and when is the best time to do so. The only drawback I found was that the recipes included some of the things they say you should stay away from. However, after eating healthy and regularly, you will find that you can eat some of those things and not feel the effects. At the end of the day, you need to listen to your body and use the book as a tool.

Finally, I would also recommend reading Body for Life by Bill Phillips. His diet is something that hypo can and should use. He delves into the many different types of proteins and carbohydrates. He also has a Body for Life cookbook that I use 3-4 times per week. His cookbook offers easy to make recipes that would surpise you to find the meals so nutritionally sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful addition to my diabetes recipe book., August 16, 2011
This review is from: Diabetes Diet: The 101 Best Diabetic Foods (Kindle Edition)
I have a husband with type II diabetes and there are 3 other relatives that suffer with the disease also. I have found this book to be an invaluable addition when planning meals and family get togethers. I often stray from the recipes I have by adding and substituting fruits or vegetables to my salads and casseroles and this easy guide is perfect. My husband loves the additions that have actually proved very beneficial to controlling his sugar levels.

Now I can prepare healthy snacks for the entire family, with foods we all enjoy, hopefully deterring my kids from getting this hereditary disease in the future.

This book has made my life easier when preparing meals, and mostly contains foods we were already eating. It is a well researched list that let me know which foods to increase by teaching me the benefits.

One thing I would like to emphasize is that this list contains easily obtainable foods that you can buy in the super market and doesn't require you to make an expensive trip to the health food store. Its a guide you will refer to time and time again.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent and Helpful Book, August 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Diabetes Diet: The 101 Best Diabetic Foods (Kindle Edition)
Diabetes Diet: the 101 Best Diabetic Foods is an excellent resource for any type of diabetes victim. The reason we found it so helpful, not only because the list of foods is right here in one fast-to-see place, but the book is far more than a "list." On each food item you get detailed health support on the benefits that particular food brings. For example, I had no idea avocados were so low on the glycemic index (great for low carb eating plans AND diabetic plans). And the healthy spices were not omitted either, such as Turmeric which we love and learned here that it helps lower LDL. This is a fantastic reference volume that doesn't take a scientist to understand and yet is extremely detailed with the specific benefits each food brings.

The nurse I talked to after my check up told me that I should try to find out more about diabetes, so I purchased this book. It helped me learn about foods that can help me manage diabetes if I ever get it.
